Babcock is a key support provider to both public and private sector industries across Europe.
Nuclear
Babcock works with the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, British Energy, EDF, Japan Nuclear Fuels Ltd, Ministry of Defence, and government energy customers in Bulgaria, Lithuania, Armenia and Russia.
As part of a consortium, Babcock is project managing the design of a new national disposal facility for low level and intermediate level waste in Bulgaria. Our role is to provide project management for site selection, design, safety assessment, construction and commissioning of a National Disposal Facility for low and intermediate level radioactive waste. We also manage the technical design of the new facility and the public consultation process.
Defence
Babcock is undertaking the design, development, manufacture and supply of the Weapon Handling and Launch System (WHLS) and Acoustic Countermeasure Launchers (ACM) for the four planned S-80 air-independent propulsion/diesel electric hybrid submarines, being built for the Spanish Navy (Armada Española) by Navantia. Work includes mechanical, electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic and software systems, as well as defining the interfaces with the submarine structure, combat system, weapons and countermeasures. Both systems feature a modular approach to construction and installation and close attention to the reduction of initial acquisition and through-life costs.
Babcock has developed a containerised life raft system, which has been installed and commissioned on Walrus submarines within the Royal Netherlands Navy. The system which can be deployed at all depths from surface to maximum diving depth provides a safe haven for the crew following escape from a stricken submarine. This safety system has been designed for absolute reliability, a task made more challenging due to the restricted space available beneath the submarine casing and the need for it to remain static for long periods but activate immediately on demand.
Power Transmission
Babcock is a lead provider of high quality overhead line services to power transmission network owners and operators, with offices in Bulgaria and across the UK.
